Is It Okay To Pee In A Sink? Explained
This is a topic that most people in our community don’t want to talk about, but it is present among us. The fact that some people, mostly men, use sinks to pee cannot be avoided. The reason is simple, unlike women, this option is often more convenient for them than using the toilet. So the question that you might ask yourself is it okay to pee in the sink and are there some downsides to that? I talked with some plumber experts about this topic, and here is what they say.
Is It Okay To Pee In A Sink? Technically, there is no rule that forbids you to pee in the sink, but it is not hygienic. Therefore, you will not cause any damage to the sink by pissing in it. Still, a bad smell of urine can be present, and the possibility of involuntary urination on the toothbrush, toothpaste, soap can happen.
As with everything, peeing in the sink has its pros and cons. The plumbers I spoke to mentioned that they often worked in bathrooms where people peed in the sinks and that there was a strong urine smell. Therefore, this is a problem that is already known. Let’s go through the pros and cons of peeing in the sink together:
The Pros: | The Cons: |
---|---|
1. Use less water for flushing | 1. Urine leaves a bad smell in the sink |
2. When the toilet is clogged | 2. Chance that you’ll make a mess |
3. Peeing in the sink is quieter | 3. the Higher possibility of bacterial transmission |
4. Using the sink when the toilet is busy | 4. It’s not hygienically appropriate |
5. Peeing in the sink is more convenient | 5. Sink can be installed high |
If you think only a few people pee in sync, think again. There is a whole section on Reddit on the topic “Sinkpisser – For people who piss in the sink” which has as many as 17,100 permanent members! It is clear that some people are horrified by peeing in the sink, but you should know that there are those who do not consider this a big deal. So let’s go a little deeper into this topic.

Do Men Actually Pee In A Sink?
A study that involved 10,000 men (since women mostly do not pee in sinks) showed that approximately 45% of men had used a sink to pee. This means that every second man peed in a sink at least once in their life, and some of them do so on a regular basis. However, there is not a lot of information on the internet about this topic, but we made an effort to extract all possible data and summarized everything we learned in this article.
Reasons Why Men Pee in The Sink
If we go a little bit back in the past, we can see that many women were shocked when they find out that a significant number of men were using a sink to pee. Many of them still do not feel comfortable visualizing such a thing. But that doesn’t disprove the fact that there are men who still pee in the sink and have good reasons for it. Let’s find out what that reasons are.
1. Peeing In the Sink Is Quieter
While it may sound weird, there are people who are pathologically intimidated by someone being able to hear them while they are peeing. There are also situations where such people do not want to wake up a roommate or family member by flushing the toilet at night. Given that this is a situation that causes fear, it is understandable.
2. Peeing In The Sink Save Water
Since a classic toilet uses as much as 1.6 gallons of water (6 liters) for a flush, it is clear that using a sink for peeing can save you water. When you pee in the sink you certainly don’t need that much water to flush your urine. Therefore, this reason for using a sink instead of the toilet can be called understandable.
3. If You’re At A Party
When you’re at a party, and someone else is using the toilet, it happens that the person has no choice but to pee in the sink. Sometimes a full bladder just can’t wait! Therefore, you may need to use a sink to pee in such situations, especially at a big party.
4. Sometimes Peeing In The Sink Can Be Fun
For some, peeing in the sink is fun, some people feel comfortable doing it, and some just want to try something new. That’s why there are a lot of teenagers among those who pee in the sink because they want to try something weird and unusual. Some people simply find it natural to do things differently than most people.
5. Bathroom is Occupied
The daily routine of living with a roommate or family members has certainly put everyone in a situation where they urgently need to pee, but the toilet is busy. It can be a very stressful situation when a person cannot wait to get in line to use the toilet. Peeing in the sink at such moments seems like a logical solution. While it is certainly not comfortable for anyone to pee in a sink while someone else is using the toilet, this discomfort is overcome due to the high pressure that creates forced retention of urine, which is unnatural for a human.
6. The Home Toilet Is Broken
Although it does not often happen that the toilet in the household is broken, such a situation is not unusual. When the toilet is broken, and the person has no choice, it is normal that they will use a sink for peeing. A common problem that can happen is that the toilet cannot flush. As the accumulation of urine in the toilet bowl causes an unpleasant odor that stinks the whole bathroom, people in such situations justifiably use the sink to pee.
So Is It Okay To Pee In a Sink?
Peeing in the sink is not recommended because of hygienic reasons. The main purpose of the sink is to brush your teeth, wash your hands and face. If you have a toilet in your bathroom, there is no reason to use a sink to pee. Also, it is completely impractical for women to pee in a sink. However, this is not the case with men, and here is the reason why they do it most often:
- More Environmentally Friendly
- They Think It Is Not Messy
- They Find It Is More Hygienic
- More Convenient

One plumber told me that this method always works for him when he has been in a situation where he had to clean a sink that smells like urine. Therefore, we recommend that you try this method. If you’re in a situation where you suspect someone is peeing in your sink, but you can’t prove it, you can always install a camera to help you with that.
How Much Water Can You Save By Peeing in the Sink?
After peeing, the average water consumption in the sink is around 0.3 gallons (1.1 liters), while the toilet uses around 1.6 gallons (6 liters) per flush.
Therefore, it is clear that peeing in the sink consumes almost 5 times less water than peeing in the toilet, but the question remains how much money you can save in one month if you decide to pee in the sink instead of the toilet?
Calculation:
A person uses the toilet around 5 times a day and consumes 1.6 gallons of water per flush. By that, we come to the data that in one day, the consumption of water for one person just for flushing the toilet is 8 gallons per day or 240 gallons per month. Currently, the price of a gallon of water is 1.3 cents, which means that the total of 240 gallons is approximately $2.
Lastly, it should be noted that if a person pees in a sink five times a day, and then flush it with 0.3 gallons (1.13 liters) of water, in one month it consumes around 45 gallons (170 liters) of water or spend around 36 cents on water.
Let’s look at the calculation:
- If we use the toilet 5 times a day for a month, we’ll use 240 gallons (908 liters) of water, which will cost us $2 per month.
- If we use the sink to pee 5 times a day for a month, we’ll use 45 gallons (170 liters) of water, which will cost us $0.36 per month.
The Disadvantages of Peeing in the Sink
While peeing in the sink can save water, there are some disadvantages that you must take into account. Here are some of the cons that can happen to the sink.
- There is a possibility that you will make a mess. Every time you pee in the sink, you contaminate with your urine everything that is usually next to the sink – soap, toothbrush, and/or toothpaste. The risk of contaminating objects next to the sink with urine increases if you urinate into the sink at night, while in a half-sleep.
- Danger of bacterial infection. Although in healthy people, especially those who do sports, the urine itself is sterile, there is always the possibility that a person has parasites and bacteria. When peeing in the sink, these parasites and bacteria can negatively affect other people in the household who use the sink.
- Bad smell of urine. If the urine is not thoroughly washed off the walls of the sink immediately after peeing, it can cause the disgusting stench of urine from the drain to spread and persist in your bathroom. Nobody wants that.
Final Thoughts
After reading this article, we can conclude that this is nothing new and that there are a lot of people who are peeing in the sink. However, I can’t decide whether you should use your sink for peeing or not. You have to make that decision yourself with the help of the information I shared with you in this article. If you decide to pee in the sink, we must emphasize how important it is to clean and sterilize the sink when you done. In any case, if you ask me, I recommend using the toilet to pee.
